Paula Modersohn Becker (1876–1907) Self-portrait with Hat and Veil. Paula Modersohn Becker was a German Expressionist painter in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Her work is noted for its intensity and blunt, unapologetic humanity, and for the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. Considered one of the most important representatives of early expressionism, she is recognized both as the first known woman painter to paint nude self-portraits and the first woman to have a museum devoted exclusively to her art, the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum, founded 1927.
