Clementine Hunter was a self-taught black folk artist from the Cane River region of Louisiana. She lived and worked on Melrose Plantation. She started working as a farm laborer at a very young age. She never learned to read or write. In her 50s he began to sell her paintings, which soon gained local and national attention for their complexity in depicting Black Southern life in the early 20th century. Hunter has become one of the most well-known self-taught artists and is described as a "memory painter" because she documented Black Southern life in the Cane River Valley in the early 20th century. Her most famous work depicts brightly colored depictions of important events like funerals, baptisms, and weddings and scenes of plantation labor like picking cotton or pecans and domestic labor. She has become the subject of many documentaries, exhibited in many prestigious museums and painted thousands of paintings.
